RAMON’s First Vibration-Based Ladle Slag Detection System

During the continuous casting process, slag detection technology from ladle to tundish has become a key research focus worldwide. Various detection methods have been developed both domestically and internationally, including infrared technology, electromagnetic induction, ladle weighing, ultrasonic detection, and other approaches.
However, due to the unique characteristics of the continuous casting process and harsh casting environments, these detection systems involve relatively high costs in installation, operation, and maintenance.
Therefore, researchers began to seek a slag detection system featuring low cost, high reliability, and minimal modification requirements for existing equipment. The vibration-based ladle slag detection technology was developed under this background.
The year 2009 was of great significance for RAMON’s vibration slag detection project team, as the Vibration-Based Slag Detection System was finally successfully developed.
From April 2007 to December 2007, the project team carried out extensive trials to identify the correct algorithm and conducted tests at more than ten steel enterprises.
The project team went through four project managers and experienced repeated disappointments and failures.
In May 2008, President Tian personally took over as the project manager and invented two national patents for new detection devices.
Persistence leads to success.
After 31 months and 932 days and nights of effort, RAMON’s Vibration-Based Slag Detection System was successfully developed.
In 2011, Fei An became the project manager. At the beginning of 2012, he focused on solving field application problems. Fei An stayed at Xiangtan Iron & Steel for two full months, collecting first-hand data and improving the algorithms based on the collected information. During this period, he completed the debugging of the tundish level control program developed with SCL. The control accuracy reached excellent performance and successfully replaced foreign control systems. Finally, the project achieved a natural alarm rate of 96% and successfully passed acceptance.
In July 2012, RAMON won the bidding project for the vibration slag detection system at POSCO Korea’s No.4 stainless steel billet continuous casting machine.
Facing numerous powerful international competitors, RAMON ultimately gained customer recognition through first-class technology and services.
Every success is achieved through extensive preparation and continuous accumulation.
In April 2013, the vibration slag detection project was successfully accepted at POSCO Korea. It took only one week from installation to final acceptance, breaking RAMON’s overseas installation record!
RAMON’s “speed” received high praise from customers. The successful implementation of the vibration slag detection project at POSCO Korea became an important driving force for RAMON’s technology to enter the global market.
